CORBIN, KY.— Williamsburg High School junior Tatum Croley recently spent five days exploring the exciting world of healthcare while attending the Baptist Health Corbin Healthcare Education Camp, an immersive program designed to introduce students to the wide variety of careers available in the medical field.
Throughout the week, Tatum joined fellow campers in hands-on activities that provided a firsthand look at the skills, technology, and teamwork that healthcare professionals use every day. Rather than simply learning through lectures, campers experienced medicine in action.
Among the week's highlights was participating in hands-on CPR training, where students learned life-saving techniques and practiced responding to emergency situations. Campers also stepped into the world of anatomy by dissecting a shark, gaining a deeper understanding of biological systems and comparative anatomy.
One of the most memorable experiences came when students observed a live surgical procedure utilizing the Da Vinci Surgical System, an advanced robotic-assisted surgical platform. Watching surgeons use cutting-edge technology gave campers a unique perspective on how innovation continues to transform patient care.
The learning experience doesn't end with the five-day camp. As part of an extension activity, Tatum and the other participants will travel to the University of Kentucky Medical Center, where they will continue exploring healthcare careers, tour medical facilities, and learn more about the educational pathways available to future healthcare professionals.
The Healthcare Education Camp is designed to inspire students who are interested in careers ranging from nursing and emergency medicine to surgery, physical therapy, laboratory sciences, imaging, and many other healthcare professions. By combining hands-on learning with direct interaction with medical professionals, the program helps students gain a better understanding of the many opportunities available in today's healthcare industry.
For Tatum, the experience provided an exciting glimpse into the future while building knowledge, confidence, and appreciation for the dedication of healthcare professionals. Programs like the Baptist Health Corbin Healthcare Education Camp continue to play an important role in encouraging the next generation of medical leaders by giving students meaningful, real-world experiences that can help shape future career goals.
